3rd
XI vs. Old Williamsonians, lost 4-2
What
a disappointment. Having recorded 2
impressive victories in the previous 2 matches and started to make a mark on the
league, we produced a generally inept performance and did not deserve anything
from the match.
From
the start it was clear that we were going to allow our opposition to run at us
and control the game. I don’t
know whether it was a hangover from beating Canterbury or just a hangover, but
the majority of the team simply did not put in much effort.
We allowed Old Wills to score within 5 minutes and then managed to
produce some worthwhile hockey to keep the score to 0-1 at half time.
Unfortunately what we discussed at half time was ignored as we conceded almost immediately. Finally we awoke and started to (gasp) pass the ball. GREG HOWARD pulled a goal back and immediately we relaxed, allowing Old Wills to score again. We woke up again, scored through GREG HOWARD and then relaxed, allowing Old Wills to score their fourth.
A
real letdown… 3 of their 4 goals were scored on the break with only myself and
one defender facing a minimum of 3 attackers each time.
Generally we seemed apathetic and lethargic, a pity as we should have won
both encounters against this opposition and instead lost both in exactly the
same way and by the same score.
Sorry,
not trying to be funny this week. That’s
it.
